Records link second Bronx Assembly member to bribe case

UPDATE 12:33 p.m.: NY1 reports that Assemblyman Castro will resign.

For the second time in three days, a state legislator has been indicted on alleged criminal conspiracy — and defendant Assemblyman Eric Stevenson of the Bronx is not the only lawmaker implicated. The complaint from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District reveals that a second, unnamed assembly member, a cooperating witness in the investigation, has agreed to resign.

Public records indicate that the unnamed “Assemblyman-1” is likely Assemblyman Nelson Castro of the Bronx.

Angela Pascasio, Castro’s chief of staff, told the World this morning that “we don’t have any info,” but that she would be sending a release by the end of the day.

The 38-page complaint identifies an “Assemblyman-1” who cooperated with the U.S. Attorney’s office, and who has agreed “to resign his office with the New York State Assembly following the arrests of the defendants charged in this complaint.”

The complaint says that Assemblyman-1 had been charged in a sealed indictment “with multiple felonies,” which will be dismissed in exchange for his cooperation.

In addition to Stevenson, the complaint identifies four defendants who were trying to open two adult day care centers in the Bronx — one in Stevenson’s district, and another on Jerome Avenue, within Assemblyman-1’s district.

The complaint references a check signed by one of the defendants, drawn on an account belonging to “New Age Adult Day Care Inc.”

Federal Medicaid data shows a “New Age Adult Day Care Center” with an address of 2287 Jerome Ave., in the Bronx, which is within Castro’s district.

Its “authorized official” is Igor Tsimerman, one of the defendants in the complaint.

New Age Adult Care Center contributed $1,000 to Castro’s 2012 campaign, records show, as well as $4,000 to the housekeeping account of the Bronx Democratic Party.
