Fierce fights for City Council

WNYC has put together a guide to City Council primaries coming up on Sept. 10, and it highlights just how many races this year will be hotly contested. Just five council incumbents are running unopposed, thanks in part to term limits. Many sitting members are being challenged by upstarts, including Jenifer Rajkumar looking to upset Margaret Chin in lower Manhattan, Julio Pabon challenging Maria del Carmen Arroyo in the Bronx, Carlos Menchaca running against Sara Gonzalez in Brooklyn, and multiple challengers against Brooklyn’s Darlene Mealy and Mathieu Eugene, the Bronx’s Andy King, upper Manhattan’s Ydanis Rodriguez and Queens’ Donovan Richards and Ruben Wills. Shifting district lines from upper Manhattan to the Bronx have emboldened four challengers to run against Melissa Mark-Viverito.
